What Can the A4 Do?
An A4 is an observer in the ambulance who assists the crew with various tasks during the shift and calls. While their role is limited, they can still contribute meaningfully to the efficiency of operations and patient care.
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Assist the charge in checking out the unit:
- Ensure all necessary equipment is present and functioning.
- Familiarize yourself with the layout of the ambulance to assist effectively during calls.
- Assist with gathering patient information:
- Obtain the medication list from a family member or the patient.
- Collect the patient’s ID for documentation purposes.
- Take patient vitals:
- Measure and record blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation.
- Communicate the vitals to the charge for documentation.
- Obtain medical history:
- Ask the patient about their past medical conditions, allergies, and any medications they are taking.
- Assist with patient care reports (PCR):
- Help the charge set up the PCR by entering basic information.
- Fill in additional details as instructed by the charge.
- Take vitals again:
- Reassess the patient’s vitals using the hospital’s equipment.
- Relay this information to the charge for their report to the nurse.
- Assist with patient handoff:
- Support the charge as they transfer care to the hospital staff.
- Clean the stretcher:
- Wipe down the stretcher thoroughly to maintain hygiene.
- Replace the sheet on the stretcher with a fresh one.
- Reorganize the unit:
- Ensure the ambulance is clean and ready for the next call.
